CAMPUS TRANSFORMATION: Tisch Transformation

In operation since 1962 and the long-standing heart of the Medical Center, the Tisch building today is undersized both for current and projected needs, with infrastructure constraints that would continue to limit its adaptability to future advancements in medical care. In short, it needs extensive refurbishment to remain viable.
The future viability of Tisch includes the facility’s seamless integration with the new Kimmel Pavilion, and planning for Kimmel’s construction and Tisch’s renovation have proceeded with this integration in mind. Tisch’s revitalization is occurring in stages, with some important projects already either completed or under way.
The long-awaited expansion of Tisch’s intensive care unit on the 15th floor was completed in April 2010, doubling the ICU’s size and completely redesigning it to provide state-of-the-art, patient-centered holistic care. The space offers 35 bed units incorporating the latest bedside care technology, configured in layouts that optimize efficiency and also the comfort of patients, visitors and staff.
A new 7,500 square foot pharmacy on the 3rd floor was opened in October 2010, featuring advanced storage and dispensing technology including a pneumatic tube system and an automated retrieval system that cuts down on dispensing errors, streamlines workflow and improves inventory control. The pharmacy also houses certified USP 797-compliant clean rooms.
The Medical Center opened the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit on Tisch’s 16th floor in early 2011. Because its patients’ immune systems are suppressed, the 4,500 sq. ft. 6-bed allogenic unit features HEPA-filtered air with relative air pressures closely monitored.
The Tisch Elevators & Lobby project is adding a new four-car elevator bank inside a freestanding 18-story structure connected to the 18-story bed tower of the hospital. This will increase the total number of elevator cars serving the hospital to 12.
This project will also expand and renovate the main lobby (pictured above), which together with the tower addition should ease visitor access to the upper floors and dramatically improve overall pedestrian flow.
The renovation adds substantial new patient and visitor amenities, both to the main lobby (including a Family Resource Center and Meditation area) and to each of the upper inpatient floors. This Tisch Elevators & Lobby project is scheduled for completion in 2012.
The next phase of Tisch’s refurbishment will start upon the Kimmel’s Pavilion’s completion in 2017. Extensive remodeling of the upper floors of Tisch will eventually reconfigure patient care units to contain all single-bedded rooms, providing the same standard of care and services as in Kimmel.
