The Medical Center will soon commence a 2 year project to closely inspect and repair the exterior masonry in most of our buildings. The work, being performed under Local Law 11/98 of the New York City Building Code, is designed to ensure safety for pedestrians and staff. As such, Facilities Management has retained the services of a specialty façade architect and masonry contractor to perform this work.
This work requires the removal of exterior brick of each building and will cause some noise and vibration. Work will be accomplished by lowering swing scaffolds from each roof.
Prior to starting the work, a project manager from Facilities Management will work with the leadership of each affected area, assess the level of impact and establish detailed schedules to minimize disruption. In addition, sidewalk sheds will be erected around certain buildings to provide protection while this work is performed.
The work schedule and work scope for 2009 follows (the 2010 schedule will be published later this year):
· Tisch Hospital – April 7, 2009 through August 15, 2009. Work scope includes roof top parapet wall, corner and face brick replacement. A sidewalk shed will be installed in the courtyard area along the south face of Tisch Hospital
· Medical Science Building – April 7, 2009 through August 15, 2009. Work scope includes parapet, face brick and partial roof replacement. A sidewalk shed will be installed along the 30th street entrance and the south west face (adjacent to HCC) of the building.
· Rubin Hall of Residence - Work schedule is April 27, 2009 through January 15, 2010. Work scope includes brick replacement and window caulking. A sidewalk shed will be installed on the south face of building on the Schwartz Lecture Hall roof, adjacent to the basketball court.
Facilities Management staff will work with all building occupants to address privacy issues, noise and vibration concerns. Notifications and communications will be issued to affected staff.
