ED TRANSFORMATION: The Emergency Department Expansion & Renovation

PROJECT OVERVIEW

NYU Langone Medical Center will expand and renovate its Emergency Department to create a more flexible and efficient environment for delivering emergency care to adults and children. The project is a high priority for the Medical Center because of current high demand for its emergency services and expected continued growth in demand in the future.

The three-year, multi-phased project will increase the size and capacity of the department from its current 6,900 square feet and 18 patient treatment positions, to more than 22,000 square feet and 40 patient positions.

Under the management of the Real Estate Development and Facilities Department, the project includes constructing a new one-story addition and renovating space recently vacated that is adjacent to the existing ED; reconfiguring the department’s current radiology department and main corridors; and completely renovating the rest of the existing ED.

Besides substantially increasing the size of the facility and its capacity to serve patients, the project reconfigures the layout and re-engineers the workflow to make the most efficient use of the space. The work will be conducted in phases to enable the Emergency Department to remain fully operational for the project’s three-year duration.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Separate triage, circulation and treatment zones for pediatric and adult patients
  • Dedicated on-grade entrances and “front-end” flow for walk-in and ambulance patient traffic
  • A “fast track” area to expedite treatment of non-urgent patients
  • Expanded imaging facilities that are fully integrated into emergency care procedures to enable faster diagnoses
  • Improved patient privacy, safety and infection control due to a layout flexible enough to provide isolation and privacy when needed, and still enhance visibility and contact between caregivers and patients
  • Standardized design of treatment rooms to allow flexibility of use to meet patient needs
  • Spacious waiting rooms with natural light, and other enhanced patient and family amenities
